Riders Profiles
Welcome to the Glasgow Wheelers rider profiles. Here you will find a selection of some Glasgow Wheelers involved in Road, Time Trial and Track. Riders in our club come from all age groups and all abilities, covering a number of different disciplines. We are lucky to have had some giants of Scottish cycling from princes of the track to King of the Mountains. We pride ourselves on being a friendly cycling club which has produced world class riders through the years. We hope to add all our recent members once they have gained a respectable palmares.
Name: Dave Smith
Discipline : Road
Profile: After a few storming junior seasons, including winning the Junior Tour of Wales, Dave spent 5 years in France trying to gain a pro contract. After some bad luck with injury and illness he headed back home to Scotland, coming to Glasgow to study. Now when not laying down the Law on the road he studies it at Glasgow University..
Name: Rab Wardell
Discipline : Road and MTB
Profile: Rab started cycling in his native Fife, quickly becoming a top mountain biker. Having represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in both road and mtb disciplines and raced extensively over the UK and overseas in various stage races, Rab is one of the top men in our roster for 2010. By day he works for Scottish Cycling, developing programmes for kids to participate in the sport.
Name: Robbie Hassan
Discipline : Road and Time Trial
Profile: Robbie is set to emerge with a bang this season from the shadow cast by his uncle and father, both former Wheelers who were top roadmen in the Scottish scene in the 80s and 90s. At 57kg Robbie is a natural climber but remarkably he is showing that he can put out a huge amount of power on the flat too - must be in the genes. Finishing 27th, just 42secs down on the winner at the Tour Doon Hame (Girvan) this year shows just what a talent he will be.
Name: Dougie Young
Discipline : Road
Profile: Dougie Young is emerging as one of the clubs best men in the hills. His cheeky chappie attitude makes him an excellent club mate, and this boy will amaze you the amounts he can eat. You can hire him for any eating competitions. Just contact the club.
Name: Jason Roberts
Discipline : Road
Profile: Vastly experienced road man who in his younger days competed in Star Trophies around the country and also raced on the continent. A great addition to the Wheelers team, Jason will always be near the front of the bunch and will pass on a ton of advice to the younger members.
Name: Nicky Cronin
Discipline : Road and Time Trial
Profile: Nicky was the Club's Newcomer of the year in 2009 - his enthusiasm knows no bounds, delving straight into racing and TT. An unfortunate victim of two early season crashes, Nicky spends as much time darning his kit and he does stitching up his training mates.
Name: Kristoff Aksnes
Discipline : Road / Time Trial / Track
Profile: One of the clubs most promicing racers. Kristoff is a natural climber while also able to churn out respectable time trial times. It is now evident he will be mixing it with the best in Scottish RR in 2010.
Name: Keith Smith
Discipline : Road / Time Trial
Profile: Keiths been involved in road cycling for a few years and now he’s at the wheelers he can only get better. A tough northerner, Keith loves to establish long breakaways - we know this is just so he can avoid crashing in the bunch. A 21min 10mile tester too!
Name: Graeme Neagle
Discipline : Road / Time Trial
Profile: Graeme ‘The Eagle’ Neagle is a keen road racer and enjoys time trialing also.Part of the Wheelers Easter stage race teams for the last 2 seasons, Graeme will also compete in 2010's Tour of the North. On form an all rounder and good bunch sprinter.
Name: Jamie Drever
Discipline : Time Trial / Track / Road
Profile : Jamie is our club all rounder; wanabee road racer who is competing in his 6th Tour of the North in 2010. Jamie can also put in a good time trial and has at last made it into the 21min category. Looking for a breakthrough year against the clock in 2010.
Name: Grant Stevenson
Discipline : Road / Hill Climb
Profile : The Club's current Hill Climb Champion, 2nd at the WOSCA champs in 2009 too. Grant is a natural cyclist, fast on the hills but strong enough to power along on the flat. Having just completed his first Easter stage race expect big things from Mr Stevenson in 2010.
Name: Jon Clarke
Discipline : Road and Time Trial
Profile: The Rebecca Romero of the Wheelers. Not a reference to any weekend cross-dressing fetishes but to Jon's conversion from top rower to cyclist. And he's taking to cycling like a er, rower to water. Already analysing his last and first open road race performance Jon has worked out why he didn't break the top 10 in the Super6. A great competitor Jon is destined for great things.
Name: Craig Dick
Discipline : Time Trial / Road / Sportif
Profile : When Craig isn't in the hospital he's prescribing a strong dose of sore legs to the opposition. A keen tester we expect some fast times from him in his comeback year. Craig has also completed several epic Tour of Flanders epics
Name: Tommy Banks
Discipline : Mostly Track
Profile: Tommy Banks is a track man, and an exceptionally talented one as his 18 national titles prove. In his day Tommy mingled with the best and is still doing so judging by the recent success at the British Masters.Tommy is now also a Director of Scottish Cycling.
Name: Neil Macleod
Discipline : Road Racer
Profile: Neil has been in the club from a youth where he won numerous trophies throughout the Scottish cycling scene and beyond. Neil is a Physiotherapist by day and combining this with his coaching expertise and cycling knowledge means his input is great for the club. Watch out for this man if he decides to make a comeback!
Name: Mark Symington
Discipline : Time Trial & Road, some Track
Profile: Mark is currently mostly involved in time trial, however enjoys track and additionally road events. His past time trail efforts in 2007 won him the Pat McCabe Trophy. For 2009, Mark plans to improve his martial arts skills.
Name: Allan MacLean
Discipline : Time Trial / Track / Some Road
Profile: Allan enjoys competing in Track events and occasionally road and time trial. Allan can also be seen occasionally with his son, and our youngest member Donald doing a 2-up on a custom tandem. Allan also competed at this years British Masters.
Name: Ed Cluer
Discipline : Road / Track / some Time Trial
Profile: Ed Cluer is a skilled cyclist in many respects. He enjoys road, time trial, track and MTB. Where Ed excels is where power is involved, be it short hill climbs or sprints. Ed is a 4 time Club hill climb champion who is currently working as an architect in Hong Kong.
Name: Davie Lang
Discipline : Road
Profile: Davie Lang is a champion vet road racer and the Club Captain. Come rain or shine Davie is out on club runs every weeekend and is always willing to help new members. Davie was previously a successful marathon runner, but turned to cycling because of injury and the expensive toys.
Name: Andy Whitehall
Discipline : Road
Profile: Andy is planning on stepping up this year and will start this Easter's Tour of the North. When on form Andy is a strong climber and all round Club man.
Name: Eric Easson
Discipline : Time Trial
Profile: Eric is a time trialist, as latecomer to cycling he has found his feet exceedingly well, putting in respectable and consistent times. As well as participating, Eric organises and hosts an open 10 mile TT every year.
Name: Jamie McQueen
Discipline : Time Trial / Track / Some Road
Profile: Jamie is a very talented juniour rider, who has had numerous high placeings at road events over the last couple of years. Also holds various WOSCA titles which is testiment to his performances. It is hoped Jamie will go on to develop even further racing for GWCC.
Name: Andy Underwood
Discipline : Time Trial / Road
Profile: Andy Underwood enjoys road racing and time trialing, with his participation in the Pat McCabe it kept other competitors on their toes. Andy is also one of the Club's race organisers and a hard working volunteer.
Name: Pete Smith
Discipline : Road / Track / Time Trial
Profile: Pete enjoys many forms of cycling, including road, time trial and also track. He has a soft spot for his fixed wheel and recently had a great time touring northern Scotland, which was a very well deserved break after his years of hard study.
Name: Andy Taylor
Discipline : Road
Profile: Andy is a road racer and tough trainer. When not riding his bike he seems to be cleaning it! Despite being a policeman, Andy is also a thoroughly top guy, always willing to offer help to new members. His only weakness is the sight of tri-bars. It's like kryptonite is to superman.
Name: Stef Collins
Discipline : Track
Profile: Stef is a great track rider, with impressive bursts of power. In previous years he has had numerous successes, and also aided Brian Carlisle in his training towards his 2006 Track Masters medal. Stef also commisaires at high profile cycling events and is involved in cycling development.
Name: Isobel Fletcher
Discipline : Time Trial / Track
Profile: Isobel is mostly involved in time trial, and additionally enjoys the track. Her performances at the recent British Masters in 2007 earned her a bronze medal, which is testament to her ability. A regular winner of the Club's Ladies prize.
Name: Peter Allen
Discipline : Sportifs / Road
Profile: Peter Allen greatly enjoys bagging sportif events whilst flying the flag for the club. 2007 seen Peter travel all over the UK to take on some of the toughest routes it has to offer including Fred Whitton and Bealach Mor challenge. Name: Graeme Shields
Discipline : Time Trial / Road / Track
Profile: Graeme is a great club mate, and in 2007 consistently improved his 10 mile TT time during the Pat McCabe trophy, keeping everyone on their toes. Since becoming a dad for the first time this year he is expecting to be busier changing nappies than inner tubes.
Name: Brian Carlisle
Discipline : Track
Profile: Brian is involved in Track competition and in 2006 was a Gold medal winner at the British Masters. His coaching under Stef Collins, brought his form and skill on considerably. Brian is a gentleman who will share his cycling experience with new and current members alike.
Name: Stuart Jackson
Discipline : Time Trial
Profile: Stuart enjoys time trailing, is an annual Pat McCabe competitor, and a willing helper at GW events. Stuart can often be spotted training around the Campsies in the north of Glasgow, sometimes wearing weights on his legs and having bricks in his rucksack.
Name: Stuart McManus
Discipline : Road / Track
Profile: Although now living in London, Stuart still competes for his home club, regularly gaining top placing on both road and track. A natural climber, Stuart has won numerous hill climbs and prologues. He now spends as much time on the track as the tarmac and packs a deceptively quick sprint.
