GWCC

If you are looking to join the club, you are likely to have a few questions and possibly uncertainties. It is hoped we can provide a bit of help to make the decision a bit easier:

Why Join Glasgow Wheelers?

Historically the club has provided international riders for Scotland and Great Britain and in these instances training has been provided from grass roots level. The club compete in a variety of cycling disciplines including road racing, time trailing and track cycling over various lengths and formats. GWCC actively encourage cycling at various levels and are open to anyone who wishes to join. The club also provides a strong social base for the cyclist who wishes to share their hobby and improve health and fitness.

We bring people together:

The club significantly improves peoples quality of life by bringing them together to participate in a common interest of cycling. As members are of a variety of ages from various backgrounds the club provides the ability to meet friends and training partners to increase general participation in sport. Our club is open to anyone who wants and is willing to join in and participate.

We increase involvement in cycling:

Being with like-minded individuals in a cycling club may increase you involvement in sport. There may be opportunities for events and runs, be it social or competitive (or both!) that weren’t present before. At the club we hope that new members are able to make friends and compete not just by wearing a top but have pride in their own club. At GWCC, we are also especially interested in inviting junior riders to compete for the club, and where appropriate can provide a small amount of financial support if the need arises. You will also have access to advice and knowledge of some riders who have competed at the highest level. This is a priceless benefit.

We help to improve the quality of life of club members:

Cycling can improve the quality of life of its participants significantly. This is through the health benefits from physical exercise, which in turn often lead to a feeling of well being by promoting a balanced life. The cycling club also has monthly club nights in addition to the training rides and competitive events. The social inclusion and network that comes from being part of the club is also something very positive. We also hope new members join with the mind to contribute something towards the GWCC in their own way to help strengthen the club as a whole.

So how do I join?

Our club nights are based at St Mungo's Academny in the East End of Glasgow, next door to the Crownpoint Sports Centre. They are on the third Monday of every month. Here is an opportunity to meet your fellow club mates, arrange training, talk about the events you’ve done together, trade books, parts, magazines etc. To join the club, simply e-mail Davie Lang before hand, and come along. Failing that, just come along and introduce yourself, - you will be more than welcome. Membership for adults is £20 and reduced for students / juniors / youths etc. During the winter months there will also be weekly circuit training at Hillhead school for strength as well as winter runs at the weekend leaving Anniesland Cross. In the coming months the new message board will be a source of information for club runs and training.

So if you have read this, there is no doubt you're interested in joining the club. Email our Club Secretary, Tommy Banks to find out more. For information on training email Club Captain, David Lang. We look forward to meeting you!
